The epic 1963 version of Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Rex Harrison plays Saturday Dec.10 at the Leslie Cheek Theater at the VMFA. Starts AT 10:30AM, goes on almost 4 hours!
Before the film, designer and author Cathy Whitlock focuses on the art direction and behind-the-scenes stories of Cleopatra. Infamous for nearly bankrupting its studio and fueled by the sizzling romances of its lead actors, this epic film is without equal for its over-the-top movie opulence. Whitlock, who lectures across the country, recently published the book Designs on Film: A Century of Hollywood Art Direction. VMFA Curator of Ancient Art, Peter Schertz, will also briefly discuss the authenticity issues in the movie’s depiction of ancient Egypt.
Lunch break: 11:30 – 12:15. Grab a bite at Best Café.
Costumes welcome! In the spirit of the event, we invite you to come dressed as Cleopatra, Mark Antony or Julius Caesar.
