GRTC officials said the increase will be the first since 1992 and is needed to generate about $1.5 million in revenue. John M. Lewis Jr., GRTC’s chief executive officer, said the transit company is looking to improve efficiencies but can’t ignore immediate needs for revenue.

GRTC had hoped that the rate increase would take effect July 12. GRTC officials were surprised after the vote to see language that makes the increase effective Sept. 19. “Hopefully, that’s a typo because we’ll need it before then,” Lewis said.
