Two staffers from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation are taking a 1,300-mile bike ride through the Chesapeake Bay watershed. John Rodenhausen and Beth McGee began their ride through Richmond Tuesday morning at Lamplighter Cafe before heading south.

John said it is all about clean water. “We all benefit from a clean Bay,” he said. “We hope to demonstrate that healthy communities, healthy lifestyles and a healthy Bay are all connected.”

They have been fortunate so far during their 950+ miles, Beth said, with just two flat tires and very little bike maintenance needed on their Trek 520s. They have packed light and have stayed with friends or in hotels. “I need good rest,” she said. ”Camping takes too much packing and weight to carry” on the bikes. They each have two saddlebags and backpacks with water for the trip.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Jess Barton was their guide to begin the morning and she hoped to join them for the first 10-15 miles before heading back to Richmond. The two CBF riders were to continue down Route 5 to Jamestown, take the ferry (“which we know is totally cheating” John said) and ride down Route 10 to Carrollton. They intend to bike to the Eastern Shore Wednesday.

The riders are hoping to raise $20,000. Half of the money would go to CBF with the rest going to other charities.
