My family and I were out for a fun paddle on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and had decided to stop on the rocks at the Powhite Ledges when we were chased down by a fisherman who needed help.

Turns out he had two large catfish that he’d caught in the calm waters of the James River just east of the Wetlands but didn’t have his daughter with him to take photos of these two monsters before he released them. He said she was usually with him but couldn’t come today and there was no way for him to take a picture of the fish with one hand and hold them with the other.

I was happy to oblige and was impressed with his determination. He had chased us in his canoe downriver and got lucky that we had decided to stop. My kids were blown away at the size of those two fish. The man estimated one at about 35 pounds and the other to be at about 30 pounds. Both were about three feet long.

He put them back in the water after each pose and we watched the fish slowly catch their breath before swimming off. I was impressed with his dedication to his daughter and he was very patient and talked us through his efforts fishing that day.

That is a side of the James River that I have not given my kids. I’m not a fisherman and would never have been out catching two catfish of that size even if I knew how. A fun diversion on an already fun afternoon on the James.
