When you go out to Brown’s Island for the RVA Fireworks and Friday Cheers the next few weeks, watch out for the new bridge being built over the Haxall Canal to Brown’s Island from the intersection of 5th and Tredegar streets.

It will be the second bridge over the canal to the east end of the island, in addition to the access at the far west end of the island. The bridge will connect to a walking path just west of the “Headman” statue. Sharon R. North, public information manager for the Department of Public Works, said the bridge project should be compliant with the American’s with Disabilities Act, should be completed by July 15 and cost less than $2 million.  More details from DPW on the bridge:

The proposed bridge would be prefabricated and composed of aluminum with a black powder coated finish.  The decking material would be Brazilian hardwood.  The bridge would be approximately 155 feet in length and approximately 8’4” inches in width, with a 3’6” inch high railing.

At each end of the bridge will be a landing.  The Tredegar Street side of the bridge would have a brick paved landing that would match the proposed brick sidewalks and crosswalks that would be installed at the intersection of South 5th Street and Tredegar Street.

The Brown’s Island side of the bridge would have a landing that will be either brick or exposed aggregate to match the existing trail material in the park.  Each landing area will be bordered by a three feet six inch (3’6”) high canal stone wall. The landscaping proposed for the Brown’s Island side of the bridge includes six (6) allee elm trees, three (3) flowering cherry trees and eight (8) Nellie Stevens hollies.
