Written in response to a wtvr piece about mysterious booms near Carytown, a suggestion that the sounds may be seismic in nature:
It’s periodic, at night when things are quiet, and one woman said it rattled the window. Another witness notes it is a rumbling sound. I noticed a few things with this story. First, the two bridges over the highway that are nearby. Trucks going over expansion joints will cause loud booms but I’m not sure this is it. So, I checked the seismic records of this part of Virginia. Recall that two years ago, a significant earthquake struck in Mineral, Va. that was felt all along the northeast coast. Well, small seismic events may be something to consider as a cause of these booms.
