With increased development in the area, more and more bear sightings are being reported around the Metro Richmond area, and Short Pump is no exception. Areas that were once wooded and filled with lush vegetation and wildlife are now home to many of the areas homes and shopping centers, forcing the animals to find new habitats, many times close to area neighborhoods.

Officials with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries recommend taking in pet food whenever possible to discourage bears and other wildlife that could be looking for a quick meal to come around.
