Battle of Five Forks 144th Anniversary living history observance

One hundred and forty-four years ago this April 1st, Union and Confederate infantry, artillery, and cavalry clashed in the woods and fields of Five Forks in Dinwiddie County in a battle that would come to be known as the “Waterloo of the Confederacy.” On Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29, 2009, Petersburg National Battlefield will sponsor a living history event on the Five Forks Battlefield at the intersection of Courthouse Road and White Oak Road in Dinwiddie County.

Activities will occur continuously between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. both days. There will be artillery firing demonstrations at 10:00, 1:00, and 3:15 p.m. each day. Infantry drills and firing demonstrations at 10:45 and 1:45 and 11:30 and 2:30 respectively. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in non-firing artillery and infantry drills.

Rangers and living historians will be present both days to describe the Battle of Five Forks and answer questions about how the soldiers lived and fought in the closing days of the siege of Petersburg.
