I was baffled a few weeks ago on a paddle trip at Huguenot Flatwater by all the tracks made in the sand. I even posted the question on the James River News Hub facebook page and got a good response from Christopher Maxwell.

I wanted to believe him, but I needed another opinion. I asked James River Park manager Ralph White to help verify since I was on a walk with him during the recent Frog’s Eye Tour. We saw some tracks and he confirmed Christopher’s guess — snails make the tracks.  They make them in the water. Likely the water levels went down a left the tracks out to dry. The beach where we found these tracks is across from Huguenot Flatwater and the water levels had dropped that week pretty quickly.
