In a surprise move during Monday’s City Council session, 3rd District representative Chris Hilbert submitted a paper to replace all four-way stops in Ginter Park and Bellevue with roundabouts. To defray the cost of the Northside roundabout initiative, Hilbert additionally proposed that each roundabout contain community garden plots to be leased to area residents. The proposal passed on an 8-1 vote.

“I am pleased my colleagues on Council recognized that extreme times call for extreme measures,” Hilbert said. “My constituents have been demanding a roundabout for years, and tonight I delivered in spades.”

Hilbert’s proposal could result in the construction of as many as 142 roundabouts. Federal stimulus money would fund as much as 70% of the total cost, as well as roundabout safety classes for senior drivers.
