Tired of waiting for the administration of Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones to reach a resolution on the proposed closure of the Diamond baseball stadium and construction of a new ball field in Shockoe Bottom, two Northside organizations have taken matters into their own hands.

The Ginter Park Residents’ Association and Union Theological Seminary announced yesterday the formation of a partnership to “keep baseball in North Richmond.” Under the proposal, the organizations would construct a new 7,500 seat ballpark on Seminary-owned property at Brook Road and Westwood Avenue. There would be no games on Sundays, but the organizations left open the possibility of tent revivals.

“In addition to a new stadium, we’re pleased to announce today that the Toledo Mud Hens will be relocating to Richmond in two weeks, and will play their entire 2009 season under the moniker of the North Richmond Roundabouts on a temporary dirt field currently being constructed behind Holton Elementary School.”

Happy April Fool’s Day, Northside.
