During the construction of the new roundabout at the intersection of Laburnum Avenue and Hermitage Road, workers discovered that the earthly remains of Confederate General A.P. Hill and his wife, long rumored to have been buried beneath the general’s statue, were not there.

“The strangest thing, though, is that we did find a pair of size 13 boots almost exactly six feet below the base of the statue,” said general contractor Lewis Ginter. “Legend had it that General Hill was buried standing upright, and he was said to have stood precisely six feet tall.”

“Also, we found the remains of a small kitten curled around one of the boots,” Ginter continued. Hill’s wife, Kitty Morgan McClung Hill, was said to have been buried with the general.

“Our best supposition at this point is that Hill just up and left his grave,” says the director of the Virginia Historical Society, which was assisting in the project. “People always said he was rash and never sat still long. His wife, obviously, was a witch.”

Happy April Fool’s Day, Northside.
