I was sad yesterday to hear that one of my favorite places (and neighbor) closed it’s doors yesterday. One North Belmont was one a Richmond’s premiere restaurants and we were fortunate enough to have it nestled in our community. Whether it was the lack of sustained hype or a struggling economy, the restaurant had to close it’s doors. One of my favorite authors, Jason Tesauro, had this to say about his last experience in a post at RichmondMagazine.com.

I managed one last meal at 1 North Belmont right before Christmas. I closed the menu and left my fate in chef/owner Frits Huntjens’ hands. It was late, and my tablemates and I were the only ones in the restaurant. Did our server doodle and text in the corner, tapping her feet impatiently while waiting for us to skedaddle (as I’ve seen in plenty o’ local joints at this hour)? No, Sally put on an impeccable show for one table, because that’s how a professional does it. She and Frits arrived with lidded entrées and lifted the domes in unison, raising the silver curtain for a glorious final act:

Tartare de Thon: Sashimi Grade Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Remoulade Sauce

Veal Tenderloin Filet with Roasted Red Pepper and Garlic Purée

It remains to be seen if the owner will open a new restaurant at the same location. I hope for our sake he does. Frits Huntjens is too great of a talent for us to lose in our neighborhood.
