5th Annual Step Up for Down Syndrome 5K This Weekend at Short Pump Town Center

The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond is hosting a great event this weekend at Short Pump Town Center. The organization will hold its fifth annual Step Up for Down Syndrome 5K and Family Festival Saturday, October 8th from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond is hosting a great event this weekend at Short Pump Town Center. The organization will hold its fifth annual Step Up for Down Syndrome 5K and Family Festival Saturday, October 8th from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

The event, previously known as The Buddy Walk, features a 5K run/walk and a free family festival that celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of children, teens and adults with Down syndrome.

“There’s a little bit of something for everyone, from live music to a pumpkin patch,” said Terri Lancaster, president of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond.

“But the real stars are our loved ones with Down syndrome, who continue to amaze us with everything they do. This event is for them and to raise awareness and funds to assist individuals with Down syndrome and their families throughout Central Virginia.”

Among the day’s festivities will be a 5K run/walk which kicks off the day at 8:30 a.m. and starts and finishes at Short Pump Town Center. A family festival will take place from 9:00 a.m. until noon, featuring live music from The Groove Motive, plus children’s activities, a pumpkin patch, performances by the Firecrackers Cheerleading Team, Miracles in Motion and the Swingers Jump Rope Team.

There will also be an appearances by Ms. Wheelchair Virginia, Nutzy the Flying Squirrel and other mascots. A Down Syndrome Superstars Ceremony, which recognizes individuals living with the disease, will take place at 11:30 a.m.
