That’s the advice coming from the RPD regarding how to prevent theft from sheds and outbuildings.

As the weather gets nicer, we’re seeing more and more neighborhood residents out working in the yard. The more often we’re going in and out of sheds and garages while taking care of our lawns and gardens, the more lax we get about keeping things secure. And as the Northside is one of the few places in the city where people actually *have* yards, this is important to remember.

From the RPD news release:

“Keep it ‘tight and bright’. By locking homes and sheds and the use of exterior lighting you decrease your risk against theft dramatically,” said Major Norris Evans of Community, Youth and Intervention Services. “Neighborhood Watch programs also provide excellent results. Be active in your local program – or set one up.”

To set up a Neighborhood Watch program call the Department’s Community Care Unit. The Unit also offers free home and property surveys. An officer will take a tour of your property and give suggestions on security improvements. Call 646-4395 to schedule an appointment.
