The weather was perfect and we got to see the full moon, Bosher’s Dam and more as we paddled in the calm waters of Huguenot Flatwater with James River Park manager Ralph White and the James River Association‘s Gabe Silver.

Gabe Silver and Ralph White paddle up the James RiverAbout 20 people paddled from the takeout at Huguenot up river to Bosher’s Dam, stopping on occasion to keep all the canoes together and to give White and Silver a chance to spread more knowledge about the virtues of the river at dusk, flatwater, fish, bugs, real estate, and more.

Full Moon paddle to Bosher's DamThe water level by the Westham Gauge was at just above four feet and the paddle to Bosher’s Dam took about an hour. We reached the shore just east of the fish ladder at the dam, and White gave the group a tour of the area, including showing off the fish ladder itself. He said the fish ladder would never have been completed without the help of the James River Association, which helped cover a funding shortage of $1 million after an accountant make an unfortunate mistake with the placement of a decimal point.

As we turned to head back downriver under the Willey Bridge just after 9 p.m., the huge moon popped up over the tree line and Riverside Drive. The group paddled slowly and enjoyed peaks at the moon in a slightly hazy but mostly clear night sky.  A unique night of getting out into nature and enjoying a work of art.
