Welcome the summer solstice Tuesday June 21 with “Candles on the Canal” with James River Park manager Ralph White along the Canal Walk.

The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, respectively, in the sense that the length of time elapsed between sunrise and sunset on this day is a maximum for the year. The JRPS also hosts an event for the winter solstice.

“Float a wish down the canal,” said White, saying the event is open to everyone. There will be floating candles for participants to light and watch float down the canal along the Canal Walk in Shockoe Bottom. According to White, the event is expected to be similar to celebrations in Asian and European cultures make a wish before setting the candle afloat.

White said there is a chance that Venture Richmond, which is responsible for the Canal Walk, would allow vendors to set up for the event.

Anyone that wants to participate should meet at the Turning Basin, just west of the intersection of 14th and Dock streets by 9 p.m. Seems like the ideal event for a FLASH MOB in downtown Richmond!
