The James River will be very active Saturday, with the Richmond Earth Day Festival and the spring fishing still in full swing at Ancarrow’s Landing. But there will also be rowing teams from across the region competing down at the Intermediate Terminal and Rocketts Landing.

From a release from Rocketts Landing:

The Crew Club at Virginia Commonwealth University is excited to announce the third annual Rocketts Landing Collegiate Regatta on Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will bring collegiate athletes from across the region to compete in a 2,000 meter course on the James River waterfront.

The family-friendly rowing competition will include participation from Virginia Commonwealth University, William & Mary, Liberty University, James Madison University and George Mason University. Varsity and novice teams will compete in 11 races, with an alumni race scheduled at noon. More than 200 spectators are expected.

“The regatta is the only collegiate rowing competition in Richmond,” said Yuriy Levitskiy, crew team coach at VCU. “Now in its third year, the event gives spectators a chance to enjoy some of the best rowing talent across the state.”

Rowers will compete in four lane races, beginning at the Vulcan Quarry and ending at the Richmond Intermediate Terminal Dock. Spectators are encouraged to come support the teams from the banks of the James River at Rocketts Landing. The event is free and open to the public. Picnic baskets and beverages are welcome.
