Saturday afternoon, the VCU Rams led the University of Delaware Fightin Blue Hens the entire forty minutes as they cruised to a 68-55 victory in Newark, Delaware.

Recap

It took nine minutes for Delaware to score its first points as the Rams’ defense made the Fightin Hens half court offense look pathetic. Despite building an 8-0 lead in those first nine minutes, Delaware responded with a pair of three pointers to keep the game close.

The Rams answered in the second half by hitting six three pointers. Delaware’s only weapon was the rebounding prowess of Josh Brinkley and Jamelle Hagins. The Rams need to improve on the defensive glass if they hope to beat teams like Old Dominion and Drexel.

Player of the Game

While Bradford Burgess did not have an efficient game offensively, he is the Rams most consistant defensive rebounder. His shooting percentage is down, but his fouls drawn and overall production have increased from last season. In the second half, his shooting from range helped the Rams gain momentum to finish the game with a W.

Rob Brandenberg is back!

For the first time in 2012, Rob Brandenberg shot above fifty percent in a game. He shot 3-5 from the field, and he looked comfortable playing to his strengths of unmatched speed and athleticism.

5 stats

  • It took Delaware nine minutes to score a single point.
  • VCU had six players with 8+ points.
  • D.J. Haley scored 8 points and grabbed five boards in only 12 minutes of action. Unfortunately his 4 fouls limited his minutes.
  • VCU limited sophomore sensation Devon Saddler (19.1 PPG) to an abysmal 3-19 from the field.
  • Troy Daniels is only shooting 32.9% from the field on the road compared to 44.4% from the field in the Siegel Center.
