Latrell Scott resigns as Spider head football coach

The University of Richmond has announced that head football coach Latrell Scott has resigned his position at the University of Richmond. Offensive coordinator Wayne Lineburg has been named the interim head coach.

Spider Athletic Director Jim Miller gave a short press conference tonight about head coach Latrell Scott’s resignation earlier today. He said he was “disappointed” and that it was one of the more difficult decisions he’s had to make as an athletic director. A couple of interesting takeaways:

• UR was aware of Coach Scott’s previous DWI charge, and it was discussed during his hiring process. There was no specific understanding that if Scott was charged with another DWI he would be fired.
• Coach Scott offered his resignation unprompted. After some difficult meetings, ultimately Miller decided to accept it. “It was the right decision to hire him, and the right decision to accept his resignation.” While Scott has not been convicted, UR decided it would be best to accept his resignation regardless.
• When Miller informed the team, he saw on their faces “a sense of shock.” Earlier this summer the players adopted the slogan “no excuses.” Miller said that will be tested in the next couple of weeks, but he is optimistic they will be successful.
• Miller wanted to make it clear that although Offensive Coordinator Wayne Lineburg has been named “Interim Head Coach,” he is most certainly the head coach for the 2011 season. UR will not interview anyone until the conclusion of the 2011 season.

Also, Virginia has a mandatory minimum sentence for second DWI offenders (which I just learned). From the Code of Virginia §18.2-270 B2:

Any person convicted of a second offense committed within a period of five to 10 years of a prior offense under § 18.2-266 shall upon conviction of the second offense be punished by a mandatory minimum fine of $500 and by confinement in jail for not less than one month. Ten days of such confinement shall be a mandatory minimum sentence.

So, if Coach Scott is convicted, and if they decide it is a “second offense,” he’ll be spending at least 10 days in jail.

Latrell Scott, only in his second year as head football coach at the University of Richmond, has resigned. Offensive coordinator Wayne Lineburg will be the interim head coach.

The Collegian is reporting that Scott was arrested for a DWI Monday night in Henrico.

“Although the timing and circumstances are unfortunate, I am confident that Coach Lineburg, his staff, and the football student-athletes will have a successful 2011 season,” said Director of Athletics Jim Miller.

Lineburg, 37, is entering his second year back on the Richmond staff after three seasons on the offensive staff at the University of Virginia. The Radford, Va. native was with the Spiders for three years from 2004-06 as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach under former head coach Dave Clawson.

Richmond’s Tuesday practice is closed. Coach Lineburg, the staff and the football student-athletes will be unavailable for comment.

Miller will be available for comment in the Robins Center Hall of Fame Room at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Interim head coach Wayne Lineburg and selected student-athletes will be available Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Robins Center.
