UCI World Championships finish line work on Broad to include plant removal and street paving

The Big Bike Race™ is sneaking up like a herd of bison.

Public Works crews for the city of Richmond will begin preparing Broad Street for the UCI Road World Championships finish line.

Beginning Thursday morning at 6 a.m., vegetation on Broad Street between 4th and 7th streets will be clipped flush to the ground in accordance with event specs and requirements. The city of Richmond is required to provide a finish line with an unobstructed view of cyclist. The affected crepe myrtles and hollies will be allowed to re-grow next season. Work is expected to continue on Broad Street until 10 a.m. During the work, the inside travel lane next to the median will be closed to traffic.

Work will continue on Saturday morning from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. James River Nurseries are donating their services to remove the remaining vegetation in the medians between 4th and 7th.

During the plant removal, the inside travel lane will continue to be closed to traffic. The plants will be replaced after the race and James River Nurseries will be redesigning and replanting the median strips as a donation to the race legacy.

Additionally, on Tuesday, September 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be lane closures during road paving in the following areas near the finish line:

  • Westbound lane of East Broad Street between 8th and 3rd Streets
  • 7th Street at East Broad Street (northbound and westbound traffic)
  • 6th Street between Marshall and East Broad streets
  • 5th Street between Marshall and East Broad streets

The Richmond Police Department will provide traffic control during the paving process.
