Two Richmond Spiders receive top basketball honors

Freshman Kendall Anthony and senior Darrius Garrett received top honors from the Atlantic 10’s head coaches. Anthony was named Rookie of the Year and Garrett was selected to the division’s All-Defensive Team.

University of Richmond freshman Kendall Anthony was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year by the league’s head coaches. Fellow teammate, senior Darrius Garret, was also selected to the A-10 All-Defensive Team.

Anthony was the Spider’s leading bench scorer and second-overall point producer, averaging 13.4 points per game. He has reached double-figures in scoring in 22 of Richmond’s 31 games. Anthony is the second UR player to earn Rookie of the Year (Kevin Anderson earned the honor in 2008). The Tennessee-native was selected to the All-Rookie squad after reaching a season-high 21 points in three games in his rookie year. He also ranks fourth in the league in three-point percentage (43.3%) and three-point shots per game (2.2), along with ranking ninth in free-throw average (.800).

Darrius Garret’s All-Defensive nomination is the player’s first, and the second-straight for the Spiders, following Kevin Smith’s honor last year. Garrett owns three of Richmond’s block records: single-game (14), single-season (104), and career (228) swats in his four-year career.

The Spiders play on Tuesday at 7pm when they visit La Salle for their Atlantic 10 Championship first-round match.
