Squirrels take on slumping Altoona Curve

The Flying Squirrels’ battle for .500 took a blow this week as they dropped 2 of 3 to the Reading Phillies. Next up for Richmond are 4 with the Western Division-leading Altoona Curve.

With August in site and the Squirrels 7 games out of playoff contention and 6 games under .500, the push is on break even for the season. The Squirrels have 38 games left, which means our favorite ridents will have to go 22-16 over the next 5+ weeks to even out the win/loss columns.

The club that comes to the Diamond this week is not the Altoona Curve of May and June. The Curve, who for while this season held the best record in professional baseball, are still up 4 1/2 games over Bowie in the Western Division but have let July slip away. Altoona has been 12-14 this past month, including losses to the Fying Squirrels, R-Phillies, B-Mets, Harrisburg Senators, Erie SeaWolves, Trenton Thunder — and a sweep by the Akron Aeros during a 7 game losing streak. Since June the Curve have lost hot-hitting outfielder Alex Presley, 2B Jim Negrych, and pitchers Daniel Moskos, Corey Hamman, and 2010 All-Star Derek Hankins have been promoted to the AAA Indianapolis Indians, and the Curve have felt the loss.
