The Richmond Flying Squirrels are playing out of town this week, first at Akron and then Erie.
The Squirrels hit the road after a day off and real crapper of a homestand. They dropped 2 of 3 to Binghamton in the Mets’ only visit to Richmond this season, and were then swept in a 3-game series by the Altoona Curve.
The Squirrels (32-38) have been on a slow slide since peaking back in early May. The Flying Squirrels now own the league’s longest streak, having lost 5 straight. So far in June they’ve won only 5 of 19 games, and have gone 10-25 since May 15.
By the time Richmond gets to Erie (30-38), the 2 teams will in all likelihood be battling for last place in the Western Division. The SeaWolves play 3 with Trenton (41-26), while the Squirrels have 3 at Akron (34-35). With Richmond up by 1 game now, neither club is likely to win pick up more than a win before the weekend’s Battle for the Bottom.
These next 3 games with the Akron Aeros are the Squirrels’ first and only games in Canal Park in 2010, and are the first time that these teams have met. In 2009, the Aeros went 89-53 and were the Southern Division champions. They went on to defeat the Northern Division champion Connecticut Defenders in 4 games to claim the Eastern League Championship.
The Akron Aeros and the Erie Seawolves both come to the Diamond for the Squirrels’ next homestand.
