Squirrels and SeaWolves wrassle for last place

The Squirrels go to Erie in a fight to stay out of last place.
The Flying Squirrels (33-40) picked up one of three in their only visit to Akron (36-36) this season. It is some consolation that the 2 games lost were each by one run (5-4, 3-2) and perhaps could have gone the other way. Still, the Squirrels are 1-9-2 over their last 12 series, with the single success against the craptacular New Britain Rock Cats (19-53).
Richmond and Erie both flirted with first place in the Western Division for minute back in May. Both clubs are now double-digit games out of first and falling further back. The Squirrels have a 1 1/2 game edge over the SeaWolves, but could head back home in last place if they drop all 3 games.
The Eastern League playoffs take the top 2 teams from the Eastern and Western Divisions, so the Squirrels wouldn’t have to catch Altoona to make the post season. They’re actually only 4 1/2 games out of 2nd place, which puts them in a 4-way fight with Bowie, Akron, and Harrisburg. If the Squirrels don’t make something happen in Erie this weekend, though, it’ll be increasingly difficult to think that placing (or even a winning season) is a possability.
After these 3 on the road, the Flying Squirrels return home for repeat series with the Akron Aeros and the Erie SeaWolves.
