Spiders win, this time with fewer turnovers!

For all the turnover trouble the Spiders (3-0) had in last week’s home opener against Wagner, they displayed none of the same weaknesses in Saturday’s 34-19 win against the VMI Keydets (0-3). Miraculously, the Spiders had exactly zero turnovers, or exactly five fewer than last week.

Spider QB Aaron Corp seems to have found his groove with 220 yards passing and 2 TD’s. His 69-yard completion to Stephen Barnette set a new career long, beating his previous best set the week before, which beat his previous best set the week before that. In other words, he has set personal records three weeks in a row.

Fortunately the Spider air attack and special teams accounted for enough points to edge the Keydets, because the running game left a little to be desired. The VMI defense held the Spiders to 112 net rushing yards and one touchdown. The net is important here, because the Spiders actually rushed forward for 162 yards, and backwards for 50.

UR Coach Wayne Lineburg commented after the game, “[We] need to run the ball consistently and our offense needs to be running the ball better. We struggled during times, running the ball against VMI, and I give them credit too. They played hard and after we didn’t run the ball as well as we are capable of running it the first two weeks so that’s something we got to improve on.”

Coach Lineburg became just the third Richmond head coach to start his career 3-0 or better, following in the footsteps of UR legends Jim Tait (3-0, 1974) and Jim Reid (5-0, 1995).

The Spiders play their first CAA conference game at Robins Stadium at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday against the New Hampshire Wildcats (1-1).
