Spiders ditch Dukes of Duquesne

Led by Kendall Anthony’s 20 points, the Richmond Spiders use a 17-3 run to start the game and rout Duquesne, 75-58, in Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

Recap

For the second consecutive game without seniors Derrick Williams and Cedrick Lindsay–Richmond’s leading scorer (18.3 PPG)–the Spiders used Kendall Anthony’s leadership and offensive firepower to keep pace with the top half of the Atlantic 10 Conference. However, Wednesday night’s defeat of the Dukes saw a Richmond squad that achieved balance while relying on its usual steady defense on the other end of the floor. Anthony (5-14 FG, 4-11 3FG, 6-6 FT), Terry Allen (12 PTS, 4-9 FG, 0-1 3FG, 4-4 FT, 9 REBS, 3 ASTS), Alonzo Nelson-Ododa (10 PTS 3-5 FG, 1-2 3FG, 3-4 FT, 4 BLKS), and ShawnDre’ Jones (13 PTS, 3-7 FG, 1-3 3FG, 6-6 FT) all scored in double figures for the Spiders.

After a rough stretch on the road, losing to St. Louis and VCU coupled with losing its senior leadership, Richmond has rebounded to win consecutive games and stay in the thick of the Atlantic 10 race. The Spiders are tied for fourth at 6-3 and have the remainder of their tough games (George Washington, La Salle, VCU) at the Robins Center.

Looking forward

The Spiders return to the Robins Center on Saturday, February 15th at 6:00 PM against Fordham (9-13, 2-7) and will also host George Washington (19-5, 7-3) next Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM.
