Spiders Crush Coastal Carolina

The Richmond Spiders scored early and often against the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at Robins Stadium on Saturday. The final score of 41-19 is a bit misleading as the Chanticleers pulled within 8 points early in the 4th quarter, primarily by breaking a couple big plays against an otherwise tight defense. The Spider defenders salvaged the game by putting on a clinic for the final 13 minutes.

The final tally is impressive enough for the 2-2 Spiders but the true standouts were individual performances by running back Tyler Kirchoff and Defensive Back/Kick Return man Justin Rogers. Rogers earned the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week award for his two interceptions (one returned for a 34-yard TD) and 52 punt return yards.

Kirchoff rushed for 126 yards and four touchdowns to take the pressure off of QB Aaron Corp’s arm. Corp was limited to just 10 completions for 132 yards in 26 passing attempts, including one interception and one touchdown.

Granted, the Chanticleers did not put up as much of a fight as Elon or Delaware, but the Spiders played more consistently for the full 60 minutes than I’ve seen all season. The fans, for the most part, rewarded the effort with stalwart support until the final seconds ticked off the clock.

That’s not to say the student section was rowdy or even arguably a factor in the win. The 1,500 or so students at kickoff dwindled to less than half that by the 3rd quarter. It’s a good thing the Spiders never lost the lead because it’s hard to rally a team without a supportive student body.

Last weekend the excuse was Parent’s Weekend. Without the promise of a free dinner off campus, what lured the students away this time? Short of locking the gates, what can be done to keep more students at the game?

The Spiders travel to CAA rivals New Hampshire and UMass before returning to Robins Stadium on 10/23 to take on Towson.
