Spiders pull of the FBS hat trick

Efficient quarterback play from senior QB Aaron Corp plus a litany of Blue Devil mistakes gave the Spiders their third win over Duke since 2006.

This Saturday the Richmond Spiders faced off against, and defeated, the Duke Blue Devils for the third time since 2006. This is Pretty Crazy. I wrote on Friday that with their head coach resigning just a week ago, the Spiders were in no position to pull off the triple upset. Well, I was wrong.

Really though, for however amazing the Spiders are–or are going to be–this season, Duke gave this one away. That’s not to take anything away from UR–well, maybe it is a little. But, it’s hard to win a game when two of your drives end in missed field goals. Oh, also, fumbling in your own redzone twice makes it pretty difficult to pick up the W. Some notes:

  • Senior Spider QB, Aaron Corp, had decent numbers: 14-31 with one touchdown and one interception.
  • Senior WR Tre Grey broke two career records: eight receptions for 129 yards
  • Coach Lineburg had this to say about the adversity the team faced last week: “I just think it’s about these kids and how they hang together and how tough they are. I just think it’s a great group of kids that works hard and they believe in each other. It’s more about them than anything else.”

The Spiders open their home season on Saturday against Wagner at 6pm.
