Russell Wilson named Seattle Seahawks’ starter

Is Russell Wilson RVA’s highest profile professional athlete?

Russell Wilson will start at quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks in their season opener against the Arizona Cardinals on September 9th.

The Richmond native attended high school at the Collegiate School and, despite a successful high school career, only received scholarship offers from NC State and Duke. After three years at NC State, Wilson took his remaining year of eligibility to Wisconsin where he lead the Badgers to a Rose Bowl and an 11-3 record. During his season at Wisconsin he set the school’s single-season passing touchdown record (33) and set the FBS single-season passing efficiency record (191.8). He was drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Wilson and the Seahawks will take on the Oakland Raiders this Thursday (August 30th) at 10pm in their final preseason game.

There aren’t a ton of professional athletes from Richmond, and certainly none of them are starting NFL quarterbacks. Here’s a quick list (most likely incomplete) of Richmonder’s playing in the NFL:

  • James Farrior, Steelers
  • Macho Harris, Eagles
  • Fontel Mines, Bears
  • Michael Robinson, Seahawks
  • Duane Brown, Texans
  • Ernest Wilford, Jaguars

Other than Denny Hamlin, is there a higher profile (active) professional athlete from Richmond?

  1. Reigning AL MVP & Cy Young winner Justin Verlander comes to mind. He’s a big deal!

If you’re talking about past and present, you have to mention Hall of Famer Willie Lanier.
