Richmond took two straight from the best team in the league and now heads out for a 4-game series with the hated Bowie Baysox.

After losing the opener 6-0, the Flying Squirrels (46-51) won the last two games at the Diamond against the otherwise high-flying Trenton Thunder (57-40). The Squirrels held Trenton to 12 hits and 5 runs in the 2 victories, while putting up 21 hits and 12 runs of their own. Tuesday’s game turned on an amazing 6-run 8th inning that put the Squirrels well ahead after trailing 3-2. Wednesday’s day game in the full sun of a Richmond summer, a grinding 4-2 victory for the Squirrels built on runs across three innings, gave David Mixon (10-5, 3.31) his 10th victory of the season.

The Squirrels now hit the buses for 4 games at the Bowie Baysox (53-45). The Baysox are holding onto 2nd place (and the last playoff spot), with the Akron Aeros (52-45) hot on their heals. The Harrisburg Senators (49-49) trail Bowie by 4 games and the 5th place Squirrels are 6 1/2 out. Richmond has no more games scheduled with Akron or Harrisburg, but does have 11 more on the calendar with Bowie and 8 1/2 with Altoona. Barring other miracles, Richmond *has* to do well at Bowie this weekend to hold onto any hope for making a move up the standings.
