Word got out last night that Michael Vick has signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

While some Eagles fans are probably stoked to have Vick, there was a bit of backlash from others, considering the nature of his crime and the public reaction it provoked.

CNN’s coverage of this includes a reaction from The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. CEO Susan Cosby said:

“Philadelphia is a city of dog lovers and most particularly, pit bull lovers… To root for someone who participated in the hanging, drowning, electrocution and shooting of dogs will be impossible for many, no matter how much we would all like to see the Eagles go all the way.”

However, team president Jim Banner made it clear that the team had thought about the possible impact of Vick’s conviction on public perception of the team, stating:

“It was very tough initially, but everybody we talked to said the same thing, that he was remorseful and that he had gone through an incredible transformation, that he was basically good at heart. We heard this over and over again from people who felt he deserved a second chance.”

Eagles coach Andy Reid added:

“This is America. We do make mistakes. This situation is a chance to prove he’s doing the right things. He’s been proactive speaking across the country.”

No specifics regarding the details of the deal have been released yet. A press conference will take place at 11am today to officially announce the signing.

animal rights nuts won’t be happy until vick is crucified and burned alive. he did his time, now let’s play some football!
    go eagles!

  2. I’m a dog guy through and through. The things that Vick did to “his” dogs made me sick, absolutely. Having said that, he’s been tried, convicted, and served his sentence. If Coach Reid and the team are willing to give him a chance, then he should have it. Reid’s words should be respected.

This guy did his time, but he is no role model. And since the NFL makes their money off of turning their players into superstars, I hate to see this guy get that job. I’m a Virginian, and Vick is a serious disappointment to everyone from the state. I recommend boycotting the Eagles, and the NFL.

I’m still surprised he served as much time as he did. People have killed other people and served less time.

He might be back to work playing football but I think it will be a long time (if ever) for him to get those endorsement deals.

I say give him a second chance and let’s see what happens.

He served his time he should get his job back….. pick appropriate battles people….. you rally outside a courthouse for crimes against dogs….yet I don’t see the same passion when it comes to something like….uuummm…… child murderers. And yes, I am a dog owner.

smear the animal abuser!!!! i hope he gets his block knocked off!

Exactly Angel. So much compassion for dogs, but worse crimes get no attention. Sure, what he did was terrible, but there’s such weird standards.

I own a dog (among other animals). But let’s keep the crime in proportion, and he did more time than any “regular” citizen ever would have done. Time to move on and let him play.

People are questioning if Philly fans will boycott this. Well, I didn’t give a damn about the Eagles, but will follow them now just because of this.

  8. I think that he should donate time and money to help animals.

Life has a way of humbuling all of us at one time or another. He did his time and has paid a high price for his mistake. “Those without sin may cast the first stone.” We all make mistakes and the Lord forgives all the mistakes, even Michael Vick’s. Who are we to not have forgiveness in our hearts for a fellow human. Good Luck Michael and God Bless.

Vick deserves more scorn. He should have done more time.
