LC Bird SG Kenny Williams III commits to VCU

Kenny Williams is the sixth ESPN top-100 recruit to sign with Coach Smart and the first big local product since Jordan Burgess.

Kenny Williams III announced via Twitter Tuesday that he will attend Virginia Commonwealth University. The Richmond native who plays for LC Bird/Boo Williams AAU is ranked 82nd overall according to ESPN, 32nd at the SG position by Scout, and 124th according to Rivals.

A 6-foot-3, 175 pound shooting guard, Williams is one of the best shooters in the 2015 class – but he’s also capable of putting it on the floor and abusing teams from the midrange. His game on offense is definitely reminiscent of Melvin Johnson, but Williams has longer arms and a quicker first step. It will be interesting to see him develop into a full-court defender.

Williams averaged 21.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg during his junior campaign for the Skyhawks before averaging 13 ppg and .437 shooting from 3-point range for the Boo Williams AAU team during the EYBL season. He had a 50 point, 6 steal, 5 rebound, 4 assist game this past season against Huguenot.

He had a final list of Indiana, North Carolina, Georgetown, Oklahoma State, Providence, Virginia Tech, and VCU. Williams joins Terry Larrier, Mike Gilmore, Justin Tillman, Melvin Johnson, and Jordan Burgess as ESPN Top-100 pickups since the 2011 run to the Final 4.

The scholarship grid shows that VCU will likely sign two more players to the 2015 class. SG Malik Beasly, SG Tevin Mack, SG Levan Alston, SF Keith Stone, SF Rayjon Tucker, SG Terrance Mann, SG Haanif Cheatham, SF Brandon Ingram, and several others are still in the mix. After a forward-heavy 2014 class, VCU is focused on shooting guards and wings.

Tuesday’s addition is huge news for VCU basketball and another sign that Coach Smart and the Rams are maintaining their upward trajectory.
