Kickers lose to DC United on penalty shots

After 120 minutes of scoreless play, DC United edged a win over the Kickers last night in a game that came down to penalty shots.

The Richmond Kickers lost to DC United last night in a game that ended in penalty shots after scoreless play lasted through 120 minutes across regulation and overtime. DC United made all four of their penalty shots, advancing to the fourth round of the US Open Cup in a 4-2 shootout.

The Kickers will resume regular season play against the Phoenix FC Wolves Friday, May 31st at City Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM. The Kickers are currently undefeated in the regular season.

The Richmond Kickers will host DC United tonight at City Stadium in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Food and beer trucks, as well as live music, will be available starting at 6:00 PM (kickoff is at 7:00 PM). Tickets are $15.

The US Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the US, open to both professional and amateur teams. This is the 15th time the Kickers have qualified for the Open Cup over the last 21 seasons, posting a 25-13 overall record. The Kickers last hosted United in last year’s Open Cup, when DC United beat the Kickers in overtime 2-1.

The winner of Tuesday’s game will host the winner of Philadelphia Union and Ocean City Nor’easters in the fourth round of the Open Cup on June 12th.
