Last night the Kickers took care of business against the Real Maryland Monarchs, winning the game 3-1 and advancing to the third round of the US Open Cup. The third round is also known as the MLS round as it is when the Major League Soccer teams enter the tournament. The Kickers will face DC United next Wednesday up in Fairfax at George Mason University.
The Kickers scored quickly in this one, getting a goal in the 10th minute off a free kick headed in by William Yomby. After surviving a couple of chances from Maryland, they got a second goal in the 69th minute on some beautiful passing by Mike Burke and Roger Bothe that was finished off by Matthew Delicate. Delicate almost got another less than a minute later to keep the excitement going. The Kickers made it 3-0 in the 78th minute on a great cross from sub Stephen Nserko that was headed home by Bobby Foglesong. Maryland got one back in minute 83 from Alan Sanchez, but it was too little too late. Great showing from the Kickers in a decisive win!
I am a bit disappointed that next week’s game isn’t going to be in town. It was great to host the LA Galaxy three years ago when the Kickers made it this far. Anyone planning to make the trip up to NOVA to root on the Kickers next week?

Congrats to the Kickers. I might be heading up but as a DC transplant and supporter of DCU since 97 I will be supporting United. I really wish this game was down here as well. That is going to be a hellish drive on a weeknight. Thanks for adding additional coverage of the Kickers.
