Richmond splits another series but holds onto 2nd place in the Western Division. The Harrisburg Senators make their only vist to Richmond playing for .500, the Squirrels are looking to get their heat back.

The Flying Squirrels (27-24) have managed to hold onto 2nd place at 6 games behind Altoona, though Bowie (26-25), Erie (25-26), and Harrisburg (25-26) are breathing down their neck. The Squirrels can gain some room, or maybe drop to 5th, over the next 3 games.

Harrisburg had, for a few weeks, the best pitcher in the minor leagues in Stephen Strasburg. Young Strasburg started 5 games for the Senators and went 3-1 with an 1.64 ERA before being called up to the AAA Syracuse Chiefs. Oddly enough, they’ve had a better winning percentage since Strasburg’s departure, going 13-7 since last playing Richmond. Richmond has gone 9-12 over the same stretch, dropping series to Erie and Reading along the way.

The Harrisburg Senators out of Harrisburg, PA (the ninth largest city in Pennsylvania), are the AA club for the Washington Nationals. They’re next-to-last in the league for team batting average, and just plain last in on-base percentage. Not many teams are behind Richmond in these columns, but Harrisburg is one of ’em. Conversely, Richmond and Harrisburg are 2nd and 3rd in team ERA (3.33 and 3.45) and runs allowed (182 and 199). Given both clubs’ strong pitching and difficulty scoring, these 3 games should not be high scoring slugfests.
