Squirrels split series with Baysox; Trenton Thunder comes to Diamond for only visit of the season.

The Flying Squirrels (44-50) took the last two to split a four-game series at home against the 2nd-place Bowie Baysox (50-45). Still mired in 5th place, the Squirrels are only 5 1/2 games out from a play-off spot going into the heart of summer. In last night’s victory, new pitcher Craig Westcott allowed only 3 hits in 7 innings and picked up hist first win. Firstbaseman Brandon Belt rolled his hitting streak out to 12 games; he’s now hitting .404 with 21 hits. After only 13 games, Belt’s 5 homeruns are 3rd best on the team.

The New York Yankees’ AA farm team Trenton Thunder (58-36) come to town tonight for their first-ever trip to Richmond. The Thunder are fresh off of a series win against the Reading Phillies (45-48) and are pressing hard for the lead in the Eastern Division. The Thunder are a strong pitching club, holding the 4th best ERA in the Eastern League at 3.70 (Richmond leads the league at 3.56). They’ve got 2 7-game winners and 2 6-game winners in the rotation, with Hector Noesi a hot 6-1 (1.74 ERA) in 10 starts after coming up from Tampa in the Florida State League. Thunder thirdbaseman Brandon Laird has 19 homeruns, contributing to a strong Trenton offense: the Thunder have plated 497 runs in 94 games (over 5 per game!), 169 more than the Flying Squirrels’ count of 328 in the same span. If the Squirrels’ pitching holds up and the team can get some runs, this could be some of the best baseball that we’ve seen all season.

  1. Those sound like some pretty good deals to go after. Hopefully these baseball teams promote safer communities because business involvement and athlete involvement is crucial to making a safe environment for everyone.
