Flying Squirrels escape the sweep, head out to battle the Phillies

Going into the three games with the SeaWolves, the big question was which hot team’s strength would show the strongest, Richmond’s pitching or Erie’s hitting? Richmond proceeded to answer that by giving up a season-high 15 hits in a loss on Tuesday, and then topped that by allowing 16 in a 9-4 loss on Wednesday.

The Flying Squirrels are on the road to face the Reading Phillies, hoping to get their mojo back after after a rough series with the Erie SeaWolves.

Thursday’s game, capped by an inside-the-park home run from shortstop Brandon Crawford, went 5-1 for the Flying Squirrels and let the club escape their first home sweep.

Even after losing 4 straight before Thursday, Richmond (23-17) is still only 1/2 game behind the Altoona Curve (23-16) and is tied for 2nd in the Western Division with Erie. The Reading Phillies (15-24) have lost 3 straight and are holding next-to-last in the Eastern Division, 10 games back from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (25-14). Richmond holds a 4-3 edge in games between the two clubs this season, having taken 3 of 4 at the Diamond and 1 of 3 at Reading in April.
