Coach Smart signs another top-100 recruit

Coach Smart and his assistants are tearing it up on the recruiting trail.

6-foot-7, 200-pound wing Tevin Mack (ESPN #56) announced his commitment to Virginia Commonwealth University Thursday afternoon from his high school in Columbia, South Carolina.

Mack is an elite scorer from the wing. He can get to the rim, has an exceptional midrange game, and is capable of hitting 3-pointers. His defense is improving, and his length will be an incredible asset in Coach Smart’s HAVOC! defense.

VCU’s future full-court press will look entirely different than the past when it is run by mobile guys with exceptional length like Mack, Terry Larrier (6-foot-10 wingspan), Justin Tillman (7-foot-2 wingspan), and Mo Alie-Cox (7-foot-1 wingspan).

Tevin Mack had a final list of Connecticut, Clemson, Georgia, and South Carolina, although the decision really came down to the Huskies and the Rams.

Shooting guard Kenny Williams (ESPN # 79) committed to VCU in August. The Rams have one more scholarship spot for next season and typically over sign by one player. This is the fall signing period so any additions will likely be made in the spring or through transfers or JUCO players.

Since the 2011 Final Four, Coach Smart and his assistants have done an incredible job recruiting. The 2016 Rams will boast seven ESPN Top-100 players: Melvin Johnson (#85), Jordan Burgess (#96), Terry Larrier (#43), Michael Gilmore (#77), Justin Tillman (#97), Kenny Williams (#79), and Tevin Mack (#58).

With the 2014-15 basketball season starting tomorrow, it’s easy to be excited about #15 VCU’s opener against Tennessee, but it’s also nice knowing that the future of HAVOC! is in good hands.
