Basketball update: May 30th, 2014

Promotions, interceptions, and a dash of trash-talking

Every now and then VCU basketball has a busy and exciting week during the offseason worthy of a recap. This week: promotions, interception, and a dose of trash-talking.

Briante Weber: NFL Cornerback

Mo Alie-Cox has received attention from NFL scouts because of his incredible physical tools, but NFL.com named Briante Weber one of ten college athletes that could be great football players. Weber should have a solid professional career on the hardwood after graduation but seeing him take to the gridiron would be highly entertaining.

VCU, Dayton should lead Atlantic 10 as it seeks to repeat record success

SI.com published a brief but thorough preview of the Atlantic 10 that is definitely worth reading. After an unprecedentedly successful season the conference probably won’t send six teams to the NCAA Tournament, but VCU and Dayton are equipped to play with most teams in the country.

McLaughlin Elevated to Associate Vice President, Receives Three-Year Extension

Whether it’s athletic performance, fundraising, or academics, McLaughlin has performed exceptionally well during his tenure at VCU. Almost every metric reflects positively on his work and it’s exciting to see what he will continue to do for VCU Athletics, the broader VCU community, and the City of Richmond.

Mo Williams fabricated feud just to mess with Rockets rookie

The basketball blogosphere has been afire this week after learning that Portland Trailblazers’ guard Mo Williams fabricated a feud just to mess with Houston Rockets’ guard Troy Daniels. A VCU shooting legend, Daniels has already left his professional mark by hitting a game winning 3-pointer in game four before dropping 17 points in game five just days after being called up from the NBA D-League Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Somewhere Pacers’ legend Reggie Miller has to be impressed by Daniels’ touch and unimpressed by the Williams’s antics.

Daniels throws out first pitch at Minute Maid Park

It’s not exactly nailing half court 3-pointers against ETSU, but it had to have been much closer than 50 Cent.
