Back to Bowie
The Squirrels pitching staff continued to shine over the weekend in a tight 2-1 series with tied-for-last in the Western Division Harrisburg Senators (12-18), to the point that going into Sunday’s game four of the top 10 pitchers in the Eastern League were Flying Squirrels.
The Flying Squirrels (18-12) stop off in Bowie to play 3 with the Baysox (15-15).
Richmond leads the head-to-head series 4-3, with 22 more games yet to be played between to 2 clubs. The last time that the Flying Squirrels visited the hated Bowie Baysox they only picked up 1 of the 4 games, but flipped the script and took 3 straight and 2nd place from the Baysox when they came to visit the Diamond.
Friday night’s 5-3 Richmond win was cemented in the 7th when a Thomas Neal single let Darren Ford score from 3rd, helping Daryl Maday (5-0, 1.78) pick up the win and become the only pitcher in the Eastern League with 5 wins and no losses. David Mixon held the Senators to 1 hit through 7 innings in Saturday’s 1-0 pitching-duel Richmond victory, with Ambort’s 8th inning homerun making the difference. Harrisburg took the 3rd game in the series on Sunday afternoon with a 3-run 5th inning knocking Richmond starter Craig Clark out of the game.
The Baysox return to Bowie after a 4-6 road trip through Richmond, Harrisburg, and Trenton, including a 15-4 shellacking at the hands of the Trenton Thunder (15-15) yesterday. After a hot 8-1 home start, Bowie is looking to get their mojo back after having lost the last 5 at Prince George’s Stadium.
Ronnie Ray (0-1, 6.57) will be stepping out of his relief role and starting on Monday for Richmond in place of the injured Mike MacDonald (1-2, 2.70). No replacement starter has been brought in, raising expectations that MacDonald will be ready to go for his next scheduled start. Ray went 1-5 with a 5.79 ERA in 43 games (3 starts) last year with the AAA Fresno Grizzlies. He has appeared in 9 games with no starts so far for Richmond.
