VCU Spirit Walk to raise spirits and close a few roads this afternoon

Avoid Seigel Center area on your way home from work this afternoon.

Ram Spirit Walk is part of Welcome Week and takes the freshman class, accompanied by spirit band The Peppas, on a march from Convocation at the Stuart C. Siegel Center down Broad and Laurel streets to Block Party in Monroe Park. In order to safely guide thousands of folks to their destination, brief road closures are necessary. The problem lies in the timing, right at rush hour around 5:00 PM.

Here are the details from last year’s walk (were assuming they’re taking the same route) courtesy of Richmond.com.

The eastbound lanes of Broad Street will be closed between Harrison Street and Laurel Street from approximately 5 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., though the exact time is subject to change. The procession will turn right onto Laurel Street, crossing Grace Street and Franklin Street and causing temporary road closures and possible brief delays as the group passes through en route to Monroe Park.

It is recommended that drivers avoid traveling east on Broad Street between approximately 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Suggested alternatives include Leigh Street, Cary Street, Interstate 95 or the Downtown Expressway.
