This Saturday, May 21, VCU will hold its spring commencement at the Richmond Coliseum. Gov. Bob McDonnell will provide the commencement address. The Coliseum is sandwiched between Broad and Leigh streets, and from 5th to 7th streets. VCU enrolls more than 32,000 students, so it’s likely that the downtown area near the Coliseum might be a place to avoid because of the increased traffic.

In addition, restaurants will likely be booked as families will be eager to take their new graduates out for a celebratory dinner. Downtown restaurants, as well as those in the Fan, will likely be busier than most typical Friday and Saturday evenings, so plan accordingly. The official commencement will end around noon Saturday, but there are also smaller department ceremonies scattered throughout the day at various locations that will last until about 9pm.
