Twitter removes fake Mayor account

RVA will have to wait a bit longer for the REAL Mayor to start tweeting #sadface

The City has successfully lobbied Twitter to suspend the erroneous @MayorJonesRVA account after confirming neither Mayor Dwight Jones nor his staff used the account.

“It is not appropriate to allow someone to impersonate the Mayor,” said Tammy Hawley, the City’s press secretary, in an email to RVANews.

The false account posted its first tweet on Monday in the early morning hours. Subsequent tweets were composed in the tone of a typical politician and mentioned Richmond-related topics, fooling many on Twitter to believe it was the Mayor. Now all traces of the account have been removed by Twitter following the account’s suspension. You can watch video of the hoaxers’ reasons for creating the account here (scroll down to the bottom).

Users can follow the official account @CityRichmondVA for updates and information.

Most unnecessary use of a “terrorist demands” video ever. Complete with masks . . . seriously?
