Thomas Jones—2016 Richmond Homicide #12

Here’s what we know so far.

We’re calling this a homicide because it has been officially termed as such by the Richmond Police Department. Before you tell us we’ve missed one–was it actually a death investigation (often self-defense)? Was it within city limits? Did the person die of wounds received in a different year? All of those deaths do not get officially counted as Richmond homicides for this year.

Victim

Thomas Jones, age 54 of 1300 bock of N. 29th Street.

His obituary reads:

JONES, Thomas Sr., 54, of Richmond, departed this life March 2, 2016. He was born in Asheville, N.C. on December 3, 1961. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie R. Jr. and Roberta W. Jones; and brother, Willie R. Jones III. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Thomas Jr., Altarik and Nygel Jones, all of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Nasir, Kylah and Jayden; two sisters, Joyce J. (Major) Griffin and Lisa J. (Rev. Pernell) Johnson; one brother, Bobby W. Jones; three nephews, Shaun Reed, Sharief O. Jones and Pernell J. Johnson; one niece, Lynell J. Johnson; and a host of relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Friday (today) at Wilson & Associates’ Funeral Service, 5008 Nine Mile Rd., where a funeral service will also be held 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Incident

Where: 1300 block of 29th Street in the East End
When: Wednesday, March 2nd at or around 8:19 AM.
Weapon: Gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Investigation

There were no signs of forced entry were apparent. That’s all we know for now.
