Swansboro Community Garden turning an empty field into food
The difference is stunning.
It’s easy to complain about an ugly field or the lack of fresh food options in the community. It’s takes a lot of work to decide to change both those things but folks at the Swansboro Community Garden (4002 Crutchfield St) are taking those steps and putting in the sweat equity to make a change. The project was started in July of 2013 but look how far they’ve come.
The picture you see at the top of the page is the before the picture you see directly above is the after. This past weekend they were part of the G.H. Reid Elementary Earth Day Celebration.

The Swansboro Community Garden’s purpose is to provide a space for the promotion of and education in urban agriculture while simultaneously developing a space for youth entrepreneurship and intergenerational community building. The census tract in which the proposed community garden is located has been identified by the USDA as a food desert. The cultivation of the Swansboro Baptist Church’s vacant lot at the corner of Crutchfield and Roanoke St in collaboration with Reveille Church will serve as a holistic approach to addressing food insecurity and limited healthy food access while also providing community members with an outdoor training center for careers in a sustainable local food system.
