Several RPS schools receive security grants

“These grants will result in safer environments for teaching and learning for thousands of students and educators.” – Gov. McAuliffe

It would be nice if we lived in a world where $6 million doesn’t have to be given to Virginia schools to focus on security measures but it’s nice to see that the money doesn’t have to come from our city’s already limited budget.

Press Release:

Virginia’s Governor Awards RPS Over $70K in Security Grants

Governor Terry McAuliffe recently announced $6 million in School Security Equipment Grant awards to protect students and teachers in 100 school divisions and six regional educational programs across the state.

The grant provides over $70,000 to support security camera and buzzer operation upgrades at the following Richmond City elementary schools: Bellevue, Chimborazo, Elizabeth D. Redd, G.H. Reid, George Mason, G.W. Carver, Ginter Park, J.E.B. Stuart, James H. Blackwell, Mary Munford and Southampton.

“Investing in security improvements that will protect our children while they are in school is critical towards building a new Virginia economy where students can learn and succeed,” said Governor McAuliffe. “These grants will result in safer environments for teaching and learning for thousands of students and educators.”

The School Security Equipment Grant program was established by the 2013 General Assembly in the aftermath of the December 14, 2012, mass shooting at Sandy Hook in Newtown, Conn.
