Saturday is Soccerday with Kickers and USMNT

You can watch soccer in City Stadium from 5 PM to 9 PM and if that appeals to you, you’re my kind of person.

The Richmond Kickers are proud to host an official outdoor viewing party at City Stadium for the USA versus Paraguay Copa America Centenario game on Saturday, June 11.

The USA & RVA Festival kicks off at 3:30 p.m. with live music, interactive fan zone, RVA food trucks and over 20 craft beers on tap before the Richmond Kickers host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 5:00 p.m. Then, the United States’ group stage finale will be shown on the largest high-definition, outdoor LED screens in RVA on the main concourse at 7:00 p.m.

The Kickers are in a slump of suckage right now with a amazingly mediocre record of 4-4-4. The Riverhounds however are worst with a record of 1-6-3. Last week we predicted a solid win against a team even more horrible than the Riverhounds and the Kickers got beat. So who really knows what Kickers team shows up tomorrow.

There is some good news on the Kickers’ front. Matthew Delicate underwent successful surgery last week to remove a cancerous mass on his kidney. If you follow soccer you know the Copa America Centenario is a big deal. If you don’t follow soccer and just read that previous sentence now you too know it’s a big deal. If you need more convincing how about, the Copa America is the oldest international soccer tournament in the world. Then there is the fact that it previously been contested only in South America. The competition begins with a round-robin stage featuring four groups of four teams. Group A consists of the USA, Colombia, Costa Rica and Paraguay; Group B comprises Brazil, Ecuador, Haiti and Peru; Group C contains Mexico, Uruguay, Jamaica and Venezuela; and Argentina, Chile, Panama and Bolivia round out Group D.

The US as predicted by most lost to Columbia but then played surprisingly well and beat (as they should) Costa Rica. This leaves the following scenario for Saturday’s game:

US Wins – Advance.
US Draws – Might Advance. Odds are good would need an upset in the Columbia/Costa Rica game.
US Loses – Go Home. You’ve let a nation down. You invited a bunch of people to party at your house and they just kicked the snot out of you.
