Samuels abandons bid for second term as Council president

Announcement clears a path for his presumed successor.

Charles Samuels (Councilman – 2nd District) announced this morning that he won’t seek a second term as City Council president, which means it’s all but certain Councilwoman Michelle Mosby (9th District) will be elected president early next year.

Here’s the statement from Samuels:

“Yesterday I informed my colleagues on Richmond City Council that I am withdrawing my name for consideration as Richmond City Council President. I have also spoken with Councilwoman Mosby on her expected nomination and installation as Council President in January and congratulated her.

“It has been a privilege and honor to serve as the chair of the governing body of the City of Richmond these past two years. I appreciate all the support from my colleagues on Council and in the greater Richmond community. As we move forward, I am confident we will continue to provide the necessary checks and balances our form of government requires.”
