RRHA disbands police force

Effective April 1st, the RRHA will disband its police force.

In a press release sent yesterday afternoon, the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority announced it would discontinue its police operations effective April 1st.

After conducting a review of its operations, the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) has concluded that its residents are better served by deploying its resources in a manner more consistent with its core mission of providing housing services rather than providing ancillary security services. Consequently, as of April 1, 2014, all RRHA police department operations will be discontinued. We have advised local government officials of this strategic change in the deployment of our services and have taken measures to assure our residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of dedicated security service and protection.

The RRHA’s former police chief is currently suing the agency “for libel and slander, unspecified punitive damages, back pay, attorney’s fees and court costs.”
